From Words to Action: Urgent Solutions for Financing SDGs

The event will feature a signature GSI format – a Dialogue session – which reinforces the value of creative approaches to navigate complex real-world situations. The format is designed to prompt participants to engage with the issue from a variety of angles by imagining themselves in different roles, i.e. the breakouts will not be strictly divided according to a person’s position, rather this exercise will encourage a broader comprehension of the issue at hand by compelling participants to think outside of their usual domain.
Conceived as a workshop, the discussion should illuminate how we can fulfill SDG commitments and make progress by 2030—before it is too late.
This session will address the critical financial challenges and opportunities associated with achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While main public and private donors demonstrate goodwill – large amounts of investments have already been made – and possess substantial capabilities, there persists a notable gap in the availability of funding. Additionally, there are insufficient incentives to mobilize investments into SDGs as an equal priority to more specific, local or national matters. This session is designed for senior representatives in the climate and finance sectors and aims to foster a deeper understanding of the complexities in financing the SDGs, promoting international cooperation, and identifying actionable solutions to bridge the existing funding gaps .
Featuring Morgan Després, Executive Director of International Climate Finance at the European Climate Foundation, the event is targeted towards representatives from the climate, finance and policy sectors. The discussion will be followed by networking.

Expert talk:
- Morgan Despres, Executive Director for International Finance, ECF, will set the scene and explain the status quo on the topic „financing the SDGs“ (10 min)
Start of discussion round (30-35 min): participants will be divided into „breakouts“ with different tables discussing the issues from the following perspectives:
- NGO sector (think tanks, philanthropies, etc .)
- Private sector
- National governments
- International organizations, e.g. I Fis
Introduction of the working paper by Helge Sigurd Naess-Schmidt (tbc) (5 min)
